ACCORDING TO DEVCENTER 67% OF THE DEVELOPERS IN NIGERIA ARE IN LAGOS

I don’t know, but it sure feels like I’ve been writing posts that have been developer-related every week for the past month or so. No, I’m not complaining, it’s just a comment that’s tied to a point – for all the events and masterclasses that have been organised for developers in Nigeria, not much is known about them. Well, someone’s decided to do something about that.

A few weeks ago, Devcenter carried out a survey and asked the developers in their community (and in the Nigerian technology ecosystem as a whole) a few questions to know more about them. Some of the questions asked had to do with gender, age, location, job satisfaction, and income. The great folks at Devcenter made an infographic (based on the results of their survey) and were kind enough to share.
Tl;dr – 90% of Nigerian developers are male, 67% live in Lagos, 96% are younger than 34 years old, 41% earn more than N100,000 per month, and 93% are self-taught.

1. 90% of Nigerian developers are male

…and  67% of the developers in Nigeria are based in Lagos. There’s nothing’s surprising about these stats – tech is a male-dominated field, and Lagos is home to a ton of Nigerian startups.

2. 96% of software developers are younger than 34 years old

Out of the 10 top programming languages in Nigeria, HTML is the most popular and Ajax is the least popular, and 45% of developers work on a freelance basis.

3. Most developers in Nigeria are self-taught

While others learnt to code in university and computer school. Also, 92% of developers in Nigeria build for web platforms.

4. 88% are satisfied with their jobs

Apparently, being a developer in Nigeria is pretty satisfying, which may or may not be linked to this next point.

5. Average income is N100,000 per month

41% earn more than N100,000 a month (which is more than the average Nigerian) and 8% earn over N500,000.

6. And no, they don’t think that’s good enough

Sadly, 73% of developers in Nigeria feel they should earn more.
